Well, I sort of decided that I really like keeping up this blog, so why not do it during school too? Though that means right now I am selfishly writing for my own enjoyment instead of reading The Collector by Fowles or doing work for my Motion class – hmm, I think I’ll survive and anyway, it’s Easter! I love saying that today, especially after I ate my weight in chocolate shaped like eggs – it’s Easter! It’s okay to be fat today. At the Appiarius home, we also celebrated my Mom’s birthday, so there was double the chocolate and plenty leftover for the next 3 months.
I don’t feel much like writing about the food, but I do think I took some decent pics, so here’s the line up :
Poppy Lemon Seed Muffins filled with yummy Lemon goo baked my my Mom.
Basic Scones, courtesy of a recipe from Mother’s Bistro Cookbook (that amazing brunch place in Portland!). I take credit for these and their perfect flakey texture – I caressed the butter just right maha.
This next godly layering of creme and chocolate is the famous Opera Creme Torte from the Bon Bonerie Bakery off of Madison. It’s my Mom’s most favorite dessert ever so I splurged and bought her a full cake. I had them write “Happy Birthday Queen Bee” and they even added a little icing bee on the side! How cute and thoughtful – just shows you how good quality they are. Cincinnati does have its gems after all. My Mom was surprised and loved it and I loved eating it! mm!
We did have real food for Easter, I just didn’t have time to take pictures of that stuff before my family downed it. I’m starting to think that this food photography thing is really fun and enjoyable to me. I can’t seem to pull myself away from snapping photos of a piece of food until I get a decent shot (I don’t get many perfect ones, but I’m no professional). I think it might be that I like the texture of food, I do tend to do close ups, though that’s not always the best choice. Also, I like the challenge of photographing how food tastes. I want the photo to taste good. I wonder if there is a way that I could get into the business of food photography on the side. Hmm. When I worked at Barefoot I went to some photo shoots at OMS where they took pictures of recipes on the Home Made Simple website. There was a hired chef who had his tool kit for arranging the food so that it was just so in front of the camera and then there was the photographer himself. It was all so much fun and so beautiful – not to mention the tasting of the subject matter.
Anyway, that thought will have to be pushed aside for now. School is kicking in…and I’m failing to get started. Clearly I just keep blabbing on here. I’m excited to recut a movie trailer and to read my 7 books for British Literature out under the warm spring sun! ahhh. But for now, since I’m procrastinating, I want to go on a little tangent about The Littlest Pet Shops.
Being home for Easter was awesome. I had already started the weekend out amazingly. It was SO GOOD to get out and hang with my friends!! But about being home – on Easter, the bunny always used to hide our baskets and my brother and I had to go searching. Once found, the basket was full of chocolate (chocolate > candy) and a small gift which was usually a beanie baby or Petshop or something of the sort. Today I felt such nostalgia for the time when finding my basket was the highlight of Easter day, the event that made me anxious during church. I loved the mystery that made me think a bunny might just have been to our house while we were all dressed up listening to some priest. Forget about the homily, I was secretly thinking about the treasures waiting at home – does that make me a bad child? Haha anyway, all this is leading to me going downstairs today to drag out my GIGANTIC bag of Littlest Pet Shop toys.
These toys were my favorite (aside from Grand Champion Horses) and looking at them now I can see how beat up they are. I truly adored them to the point where I destroyed them, but some still retain their full color and cute eyes. I had quite a few of the horses, OF COURSE and plenty of others such as dogs, bobcats, kitties, whales, seals, foxes, bears…It was this whole world of animals that were cute and not eerily frightening like the new version of Littlest Petshops. Compare below.
Cute and somewhat true to life with adorable styling – vs – unbalanced with alien sparkle eyes and huge bauble heads EW!
My point is, I wish these poor little toys still had their awesome 90’s design. Things now apparently have to look freakishly outrageous and glam to catch kid’s interest. What happened to good old toys that were there simply for you to play with and exercise your imagination on? I guess I might be harsh on this new trend in bug-eyed toys – they are kind of fun and stylized…but in my opinion they are TOO much so, they are TOO CUTE. I’m just glad I got to play with the old design!
Yey for toys, yey for my friends, yey for Easter, and yey for a guilt-free chocolate day! I had such a good weekend!
Oh, and Kirby got a haircut + a new collar with bees on it for my Mom, Queen Bee…hehe, he’s so goofy, cute.

I agree, the new pet shop animals look very weird! I tried to start my kids on them because I remembered you and Tony loving them so much. They never do play with them:(
